HOW TO make Faux Metal Book Corners

This tutorial shows you how to make faux metal corners for your handmade books and journals.

Faux metal says it all: these corners are made from card stock. You can make them in any size or shape that you like, I’m going to show you how I do it, and from there on you can make variations to fit your wants and needs.

Materials & Tools:

Here’s the video how it’s done step by step. You can see every step again below.

The pattern

8 steps to draw this pattern on your card stock with the measurements that you need for your cover. I suggest to try on a piece of scrap paper first, just to be safe. The red is new in every step.

1. First we start with the visible part of the corner. Think about how wide and high you want the corner to be. I chose 1 inch (2.5 cm). Draw a line that length, and another one 90° on top of that.

2. Step 2 and 3 makes the shape of the visible part of the corner. I chose to go 1/4 inch (8 mm) inward and then

3. Connect those points with a curved line (I used a washi tape roll to do that).

4. Measure the thickness of your cover. Draw that width + a smidge more on either side of the corner.

5. Add the red lines the same length that you chose in step 1.

6. Connect the 4 points as shown on the image. If drawn right they should match up.

7. Turn your drawing 45° to the left, that’s easier. Then draw vertical lines from the points on the sketch straight down.

8. Cut out the pattern and cut off the red parts.

Making the corner

Since this is a very small piece, I suggest to use something sharp to score the folding lines. I used the back of a craft knife blade (not the front, or your hard work will have been for nothing).

Fold the scoring lines for a sharp fold. I like to go in there with a bone folder for a crisp and clean fold.

Fold the corner. In this image the back is up.

To close the corner, cut a square piece of paper the height and width of the size you chose for your corner. In this case it’s 1 x 1 inch (2.5 x 2.5 cm).

Fold the piece in half like done on the image.

Put glue on the inside of the paper piece, hold the corner piece together with your fingers and glue one triangle of the paper piece on the inside of the corner and one triangle on the outside. This holds the seam together.

Hold the seam of the corner piece closed and press the paper piece inside and out until the glue sticks.

The corner is ready now to be embellished.

Paint the corner with acrylic metallic paint, I used a bronze acrylic paint. You can also use silver, gold, copper, etc. Whatever fits your book best.

When the paint is dry, dab the blending tool in some black ink and rub all over it to make it more grungy. Take excess ink of with a rag. Keep adding and removing ink until you’re happy.

When the ink is dry add a layer of Mod Podge to seal the corner.

When the Mod Podge is dry put some glue inside the corners and glue them on your book cover.

Ready!
